After Ted Nugent's latest tirade, I started thinking about musicians voicing ther opinions on politics...and honestly - please excuse my bluntness when I say this - but I just want them all to shut the hell up. Everyone is entitled to their beliefs and points of view, but these musicians aren't politicial scientists! What the hell do they know about the current state of affairs in the country?!?
Now, I am the type of person who wants to flip off every person on the road who tries to shove their beliefs down people's throats via bumper sticker. Don't get me wrong - I think EVERYONE is entitled to believe exactly what they want to believe and I will never begrudge anyone their opinion, even if it doesn't sync with mine, but pissing me off while I am on the road is definitely not in your best interest. I don't know you and I don't care whether you love, hate, or want to make out with Obama, nor do I want to know what you believe is right or wrong. And, trust me, your opinion is not going to change mine. The same sentiment applies to musicians trying to sway people's votes in one direction or another - the only difference is that some people actually care what their favorite artists/bands think (unlike these idiots with their damn bumper stickers) and some fans can be easily swayed.
I think it's absolutely cool when celebrities encourage the general public to get involved in politics and research the issues in order to draw their own opinion. However, it is NOT cool to tell people to vote for someone just because you said so. Let people draw their own conclusions on the issues. What affects a musician is not going to affect someone who is working a 9-5 living paycheck to paycheck. Everything in politics is relative.
So, I leave you with this quote from GWAR frontman Oderus...Oderus absolutely agrees with me on this topic and so when he heard Dave Mustaine of Megadeth going on and on about his extreme right-wing sentiments, he issued this ever so eloquent statement in an interview:
"Keep your f—ing mouth shut Dave Mustaine. Play your f—ing guitar, alright?"
Yep.
