The clock is ticking to register for the Count Basie Theatre’s Performing Arts Academy winter session courses for adults. The theatre’s adult winter courses offer a series of 4-week workshops designed to improve speaking skills, or to discover and strengthen one’s ability as an actor, singer or dancer.
Two courses are offered on Monday evenings:
Beginning February 3rd, instructor Melanie Taylor - an award-winning director, stage manager, makeup artist and performing arts teacher at Raritan High School - offers Enhance Your Public Speaking Skills. The course is designed to teach adults to fully engage their audiences with a confident and self-assured approach to speaking. (February 3, 10, 17 and 24; 7:30 – 8:30pm. Course fee: $70)
Beginning March 3rd, instructor Bradley Mott - an accomplished college professor and film, television and commercial professional - offers a 4-week Voice-Over Mini Lab. Adults will learn the skills necessary to succeed in the voiceover business, including skills necessary for auditions, copy interpretation, finding one’s character, proper microphone use, breath control and voice placement. (March 3, 10, 17 & 24; 8-9:30pm. Course fee: $90)
Tuesday evenings offer a lesson on acting improvisation:
Instructor Michael O’Keeffe, a professional improve comic with more than 20 years of experience, has performed alongside Wayne Brady and Jonathan Magnum. In his Adult Acting Improvisation course, adults will find a creative outlet for their ‘playful’ side, learning the skills necessary to express creativity and humor, communicate through physicality, create intuition, and – most of all – have fun. Two, four-week sessions are offered: January 21, 28 and February 4 and 11, and a second round on February 18, 25 and March 4 and 11. Each sessions runs from 8-9:30pm and carries a $90 course fee.
Wednesday sessions are the Basie’s most vocal -- striking chords for songbirds and speakers alike.
The Adult Beginner Vocal course caters to those with a passion for singing – but not necessarily the confidence to show it off to the world. Instructor Corey Markowitz, a graduate of the New York Foundations for the Arts’ Musical Theatre Conservatory, has studied voice and acting under numerous Broadway veterans and promises a fun, stress-free environment for his students. Two, four-week sessions are offered: January 22, 29 and February 5 and 12, and a second round on February 19, 26 and March 5 and 12. Both sessions run from 8-9:30pm and carry a $90 course fee.
The Improve And Enhance Your Voice workshop is another session taught by Bradley Mott. Students will learn to preserve, develop and strengthen their voices, to speak distinctly and clearly, develop dynamic and persuasive public speaking techniques to and gain an overall understanding of vocal preservation. Two, four-week sessions are offered: February 5, 12, 19 and 26, plus a second round on March 5, 12, 19 and 26. Both sessions run from 8:30-10pm and carry a $90 course fee.
And finally, on Thursdays, teens and adults are invited to tap their inner dancer. The Basie’s four-week tap course covers warm-ups and familiarizes students with tap dance vocabulary, while incorporating simple combinations and fully-choreographed dance sequences to provide a challenging, fun workout. The first sessions runs on January 23, 30 and February 6 and 13; a second session takes place February 20, 27 and March 6 and 13. Both sessions run from 7-8pm and carry a $70 course fee.
