Ok, so I'm not so air-headed to think that I'll just be able to get off the couch on May 1st and run 13 miles. Yes, I understand that I have to train. And, now that we're in a truth-telling frame of mind, let me just say that I have run before. Afew years ago I did the Manasquan Turkey Trot. That's the five mile run that's so popular the Saturday before Thanksgiving. After that trot, my knees got the trots. (I learned later that you've got to replace your sneakers because when the bounce runs out of 'em, it hurts the knees.) Since I'm not a big fan of pain, I quit running and concentrated on cycling.

So, guess what was the first thing I did when I decided to start the Rat Running Team? Yeah, plunked down some $$ for a new pair of sneakers, thanks to my pal Bruce over at Miles Ahead.

I've been testing out the new sneaks over the past few weeks. Yesterday, I stretched my distance to 5.5 miles. The left knee started to trot again, but for the most part it went pretty well. What a killer day for it too... sunny and warm with a light wind. Killer!

I ran down to the beach near my house, climbed up the access path and was totally awestruck by the view of the ocean. Now, maybe it was that so-called "runners high" that I was feeling, but with the sun and the ocean, and the sand stretched out for miles... I was totally struck by how lucky I am to live here on the Jersey Shore, and to be healthy enough to challenge myself with this half marathon to benefit the LADACIN Network. We Shore residents are truely blessed.
