Rush is showing up on more than just the music charts these days.
After the group's new album "Clockwork Angels" debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 earlier this year, "Clockwork Angels: The Novel" by drummer Neil Peart and science fiction writer Kevin J. Anderson bowed at No. 18 on the New York Times Hardcover Fiction best seller list.
The novel expands on the album's concept that Anderson describes as, "In a young man's quest to follow his dreams, he is caught between the grandiose forces of order and chaos. He travels across a lavish and colorful world of steampunk and alchemy, with lost cities, pirates, anarchists, exotic carnivals and a rigid Watchmaker who imposes precision on every aspect of daily life."
Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson tells us that Peart had the story in mind as he began presenting lyrics to the band while recording the album, and after previous concept pieces such as "2112" and "Hemispheres" he and bassist-keyboardist Geddy Lee follow the drummer's lead:
"We understood what the gist of the story was, and it of course evolved over that period of time, over a couple of years. Some things were dropped. Some lyrics were re-written over the course of that time.”
“We understood that it was a story about a journey, and with that singular thought in mind that's kind of how we approached the music to it. We wanted to make it quite cinematic and get a sense of going to these places and feeling these sort of moods as the journey continues."
Rush is on its own journey, touring North America to support "Clockwork Angels" though early December, with a European tour slated to start during May in the U.K.
