This year’s Record Store Day was a massive success for independent music shops and Nirvana, whose 7” single release of “Pennyroyal Tea/I Hate Myself And Want To Die” topped Billboard’s Vinyl Singles chart. According to Billboard.com, Nirvana sold 3,000 copies of the limited edition single, which originally had 6,000 copies pressed for April 19th’s Record Store Day. Overall sales for this year’s Record Store Day were the highest in its history. Vinyl LP sales were up 58% from 2013, and out of the top 50 vinyl LPs sold in the U.S. that week, 43 of those titles were Record Store Day exclusives or were in wide release for the first time. Considering Nirvana’s and Record Store Day’s success as a whole, it’ll be interesting to see what artists will take part in next year’s celebration. The demand is obviously there.
