On the surface, a collaboration between Billy Corgan and Tommy Lee doesn’t exactly make sense, but according to Corgan, the two musicians both like to experiment with different musical technologies, which has led to Lee being featured on all nine tracks of the Smashing Pumpkins’ upcoming album Monument to an Elegy. In a post to The Official Smashing Pumpkins Nexus, Corgan explains that he and Lee first met in the early nineties when Lee attended a Smashing Pumpkins show, and the two have crossed paths many times over the past couple of decades. While recording, Corgan said to guitarist Jeff Schroeder that a song really needed someone like Lee on the drum track, to which Schroeder suggested to Corgan to just call the Motley Crue drummer. Who knew collaboration could be THAT simple?! Also, it must be nice to have enough pull to just get Tommy Lee to drum on your album. If fans are wondering if recording will get in the way of the big farewell tour Motley Crue has planned for this year, don’t worry. Corgan says all of Lee’s drumming will wrap recording in a few weeks.
