Seth MacFarlane and everyone else over at Family Guy have found their niche: pushing the envelope and making jokes that people either wouldn’t think to make, or wouldn’t be brave enough to. They use multiple cutaways in every episode that are just downright wrong, and that’s what their viewers love.
We have assembled the Top 5 most memorable and funny appearances by some Rock & Roll legends on the show that always manages to “go there.”
1. Mick Jagger
If there is one thing that Family Guy viewers either love or hate, it’s when the show decides to have extensive cutaways, which include long, real life clips from various sources (notably Conway Twitty multiple times) and that is where Mick Jagger comes in.
In the season 9 episode, Foreign Affairs, Peter sets up a cutaway claiming that, “1985 gave us the gayest music video of all time.” Mick Jagger and David Bowie’s music video for “Dancing in the Street” is then played in its entirety. Peter then sums it all up by saying “that happened and we all let it happen.
2. Ozzy Osbourne
Some of the best Family Guy moments come from when they show someone in a different light doing something completely opposite of what they really do. As The Prince of Darkness, Ozzy’s most known and talked about moment may have been when he ate the head off of a bat, perfect for Family Guy.
3. Tommy Lee
Tommy Lee is tailor made for Family Guy jokes, so it’s no wonder why he’s made multiple appearances. They’ve had Stewie try to tell a hepatitis joke in front of Tommy and wife Pamela Anderson (who famously had hepatitis C after she claimed she shared a tattoo needle with Lee), Stewie also cracks a joke after failing to gain his mothers attention and cracks, “What is this, a Tommy Lee pool party?” undoubtedly a reference to the tragic accident when a 4-year old boy drowned at a birthday party for Lee’s son.
The best Lee appearance comes in the season 8 episode, April in Quahog. Peter is down on himself for not being special and that’s when Tommy Lee shows up with some winning advice.
4. Ace Frehley (KISS)
KISS has been all over Family Guy episodes throughout the years, they even saved Christmas in multiple episodes. There is no denying that KISS is Peter’s favorite band, but apparently, the Family Guy creators, don’t think too highly of former guitarist, Ace Frehley.
The best KISS joke, in a TV commercial promoting their upcoming concerts, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons do the talking about their upcoming show that is… Until Ace interrupts them by exclaiming “Rock and Roll!” in the middle of Gene’s sentence. Gene then politely asks Ace to go sit in the corner as if he just didn’t know any better. Poor Ace.
Poor Bono, one of the most criticized front men in the world just can’t get a break. He was made fun of on Family Guy’s rival show, South Park, in an extreme way and Family Guy refused to not take a jab at the U2 lead man in its movie, Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story.
In typical cut away fashion, Peter remembers being stuck on a desert island with Bono, and the result is a priceless scenario.
