When the warm weather starts rolling in, there’s nothing better than sitting back, turning up the radio and rockin’ out to the breezy songs of summer. In honor of the upcoming months of sun, beach and BBQs, here are our Top 5 songs to help you kick off the season the right way!
1. Kid Rock – All Summer Long
“All Summer Long” by Kid Rock may be the new summer anthem for years to come. From his seventh album Rock n’ Roll Jesus, the song reached #1 in eight countries in 2008, and is undeniably the biggest hit of his career. Aside from its catchy sing-a-long status, the song also broadened Kid Rock’s demographic, bringing the different generations and even families into the crowd.
2. The Ataris – Boys of Summer
The Ataris recreated “Boys of Summer,” first made a hit by Eagles co-founder Don Henley in 1984. Included on the Ataris’ 2003 album So Long, Astoria, the song became an instant favorite. Bringing a new-age rock sound of heavier guitars and drums, The Ataris did a good job of paying respect to the original. The only difference is that the cover flips Don Henley’s lyrics from “Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac” to “Black Flag sticker on a Cadillac,” referencing an ‘80s punk band instead of the ‘70s rockers, The Grateful Dead.
3. Sublime – Summertime (Doin’ Time)
“Summertime (Doin’ Time)” was the final song of Sublime’s third self-titled album in 1996 and was a detached cover of George Gershwin’s 1935 song “Summertime.” The album was released shortly after lead singer Brad Nowell’s death, because of which Sublime agreed to let producer Michael Happoldt dub over the phrase “doin’ time” with “summertime.” Sublime has earned a great deal of praise and respect from their loyal fans, and the original was re-released in 2006 on the band’s self-titled Deluxe Edition.
4. Weezer – Island In The Sun
“Island In The Sun” comes off of Weezer’s self-titled third album in 2001, also known as “The Green Album” because of the lime-green backdrop. The band didn't originally plan to include the song on the album, but we're certainly glad that they did! "Island in the Sun" is the perfect song to dream of that long-awaited summer vacation time in the tropics.
5. Red Hot Chili Peppers – Californication
The perfect combination of punk and funk, listening to Red Hot Chili Peppers’ hit “Californication” is a great way to get in the spirit of summer, even if the temperature doesn’t agree. From their 1999 album of the same name, this song provides a feel-good sensation as the lyrics seem to flow together. Day or night, “Californication” is the perfect summer tune.
