Summer is just around the corner, bringing sunshine, barbecues and, of course, the heat. So before the temperature gauge starts rising, here are the Top 5 songs to help get you through those scorching summer days.
1. “Black Hole Sun” – Soundgarden
“Black Hole Sun” from Soundgarden’s fourth album, Superunknown, was one of 1994’s biggest summer rock hits. The song’s perfect mix of grunge and psychedelic edge made it an instant hit and earned the group a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance. That’s why “Black Hole Sun” is one of our favorite songs to beat the heat this summer.
2. “Paradise City” – Guns n’ Roses
It might seem like an obvious choice, but when the heat is unbearable, who doesn’t dream of an oasis “where the grass is green and the girls are pretty?” With their third top ten hit from Appetite for Destruction, GNR’s “Paradise City” had fans wanting more. The nearly seven-minute track shows off the band’s strengths, with Slash shining as a guitar soloist with short riffs throughout the song.
3. “Sunset in July” – 311
311’s “Sunset in July” has the perfect laidback melody for summertime. The deceivingly upbeat song, from the band’s edgy eight-song album Universal Pulse, the song is a reminder that “time is flying by,” even when you’re “having the time of your life.” With that in mind, you should spend your summer only rocking out to the best, and “Sunset in July” definitely fits that description.
4. “Sunburn” – Fuel
“Sunburn,” from Fuel’s 1998 platinum-selling debut album of the same name, serves as more a warning than the other songs. If you’re feeling the need to “let the sun fall all over” you, make sure to protect your skin. But while nobody likes getting sunburned, we definitely want to jam out to “Sunburn” this summer.
5. “Jewel of the Summertime” – Audioslave
Audioslave’s grim rock sound on their 2006 song “Jewel of the Summertime” is perfect for helping you forget just how hot it is outside. Lead vocalist Chris Cornell sings about the summers of his youth with lyrics like “You’re reminding me...of a better space and time, miles away,” making “Jewel of the Summertime” the perfect song to bring you back to the best summers you ever had.
